The situation changed in autumn 2005 when I joined SimbirSoft Ltd as a part-time software developer. Suddenly my previous learnings in web development turned out to be particularly useful. My first assignment was adding new features to an existing project management and accounting software for Japanese construction company. The software was running on Apache Tomcat. Development of the project required knowledge of Java for the back end since it was built on Java Servlets. The programming language I knew from before, but not those technologies for dynamically generated web pages like JavaServer Pages. On the other hand, I was already quite familiar with JavaScript. Similarly, I was confident enough in HTML and CSS. Learning PostgreSQL was relatively easy since I already knew a few other database management systems.
A few months later I received my new assignment – to develop a prototype for content management system. The existing system became obsolete and needed a refresh. Since the only priority was getting quick results, I had the complete freedom of choice. Perl became the easiest option for this task.
The next project was development of e-commerce shopping cart software. Since I was already familiar with PHP and MySQL, my main technical challenge was credit card processing in payment modules. However, the biggest source of my concerns was the approaching date of my master's thesis defense. To really be on the safe side, I chose to leave the company in April 2007.
