Alexander – My story

Reading longer texts takes some time. A cup of tea (or coffee) might help. β˜•

Looks like you are not scared by seeing longer texts. This makes me happy. 😊

Back to my story

Since I left Ericsson after 12.5 years, I was entitled to receive a generous severance package. In other words, I received some time with full salary but without any work responsibilities, either than non-disclosure. Many people prefered to have a long break, others planned a long trip, some immediately started to look for another job. I also went to a few job interviews in the beginning. However, nothing seemed serious enough. Suddenly I remembered my old interest in learning about economics. Perhaps, my situation could be such an opportunity worth giving a try. I decided to make a belated application to the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg and was admitted. Back to school after 12 years! Well, actually I was taking some courses even before and that was in parallel with working at Ericsson but usually only part-time during evenings. Studying full-time again was a pleasant experience. Surprisingly, I could still remember some calculus and a few other subjects despite the fact that more than 20 years passed since I was learning them. Not sure if I should be more grateful to my strict teachers or to my memory. But I am grateful! If you have become curious about my course subjects, you can read here. (The post is in Swedish but the automatic translation is quite accurate.) Alternatively, you can find the document with some of my university courses if you check out the page with my CV.

Universities are always supposed to be "temples of knowledge". No surprises here. πŸŽ“
Some knowledge is rare. Listening to Simon Johnson is an opportunity not to be missed.
Quite a few of others thought the same and joined the lecture about societal institutions.
We could see those effects of institutions on the economic development of countries.
Also, thanks to Jessica Oscarsson for taking and sharing the photo from this event.
(The man on stage is Simon Johnson, the man in white turtleneck in the 7th row is me.)

You could almost expect that I also spent some time refreshing my knowledge about the artificial intelligence (AI). Almost 20 years passed since I was working with intellectual systems during my time at Ulyanovsk State Technical University. Back then no one heard about ChatGPT. However, image recognition and neural networks were known already at that time. I still remember building Rosenblatt's perceptron in spring 2006. Now I got to use a few new libraries and technologies. At first I found a local face-to-face course (more details in Swedish can be found here). As a birthday present, I also received a less technical online course (info in English is here). I am still having fun with some AI models at home. Perhaps, I should tell about it later. Stay tuned!

Not sure if I should mention shorter courses in MATLAB and geographic information system (GIS). On the one hand they are on the basic level. But on the other hand both courses required a bit of programming from me. (Yes, I had to play a bit with data queries when I was doing my GIS assignments.) I also spent some weeks to prepare for my PRINCE2 certification in project management. Now I am officially certified – twice!
